An Overview of Pedodontics (Children Dentistry)
A pedodontist is a dentist who specializes in caring for the dental needs of children. Children have some special dental needs, because they are still growing, and as a result their mouths are actively developing. As children lose baby teeth and develop adult teeth, the care of a pedodontist can support the long-term health of their adult teeth.
Child's first (milk) teeth are important because, apart from being needed for chewing and speaking, they help to maintain space for the permanent teeth, developing underneath them in the jaws. If the milk teeth are well looked after, then it is more likely that the second (permanent) teeth will grow into their correct position.
